How To Breastfeed In a Baby Wrap or Sling

How do you breastfeed a baby in a stretchy baby wrap or baby sling? Here’s a real-life demonstration with 8-week-old Jules.

Realistically, you may find this is easier to do when your baby is a month or two old. The Jules here is eight weeks old. He’s getting quite sleepy, probably ready for a little bit of feed. In this video, Mel is going to go ahead and show you one option of how you can feed in a stretchy wrap. (This is the awesome Izmi Baby Wrap).

Remember, this is just one tool in your feeding journey. It is just an option and something you might want to try. How easy and practical your find it will depend on your baby’s latch and their age and developmental stage.

It will depend also on your anatomy and how you fit together. So depending on the length of your torso, the size of your breasts, and the position of your nipples, all sorts of things will vary.

You can see if this demo there are ways that you can use one or two layers of the wrap fabric to support your baby, but this is NOT a hands-free feeding position. You’re still going to need at least one hand here to support your baby’s head.

Once you’re sitting down, you can probably substitute one of your arms for a cushion, but they’re feeding on the go –  if you were doing this in a queue at the supermarket, for example – you’ll still need one hand.

The most important thing to remember is that once you’ve finished feeding, you must not let your baby fall asleep in this position because their airways could be compromised. So you’ll need to make sure, even if it’s tempting to leave them there, that you reposition them upright in the sling.
